Pace is how long it takes you to cover one mile or one kilometer. It is the number most runners train and race by, because it turns a goal finish time into something you can check on your watch every few minutes.

Enter any two of distance, time and pace, choose which one to solve for, and the calculator fills in the third. Switch between minutes per mile and minutes per kilometer at any time; the splits table below shows where you should be at every mile or kilometer if you run an even pace.

Use it to turn a goal time into a target pace, to see what finish time your usual training pace predicts, or to work out how far you ran from your time and average pace. Results are kept in the page address, so you can bookmark or share them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your total time by the distance you ran. For example, 25 minutes over 5 kilometers is 5:00 per kilometer, which is about 8:03 per mile.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time per distance (minutes per mile or kilometer); speed is distance per time (miles or kilometers per hour). Runners usually use pace because it maps directly to splits.

Should I run even splits?

For most runners an even or slightly negative split (second half a little faster) gives the best result. Starting much faster than goal pace usually costs more time later than it saves early.

Can I use this for walking?

Yes. The math is the same for walking, hiking or any steady effort; enter your distance and time and read the pace.
